Climate

The Makalu -Barun area falls in the eastern Himalayan climatic regime where the monsoon season starts in early (June) and lasts generally until late September. Pre-monsoon rains are also common during April and May. Great variations in temperature and precipitation can be expected throughout the year due to extreme differences in altitude and geography of the area.

Park Regulations:

· Park entry fee of NRS.3000. (About USD 40.00) must be paid at the national parks ticket counter or TrideviMargaThamel, Kathmandu. Ticket offices are open between 9:15 AM and 4.00 PM.

· Purchase of illegal animal or plant products is prohibited

· Travel in the park between the sunset set and sunrise is prohibited

· Flora and fauna are fully protected and must not be disturbed

· Non- biodegradable items such as plastic and bottles must be carried out of the park

Getting there and away:

· Flights operate daily between Kathmandu and Tumlingtar. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

· Bus between Tumlingtar and Dharan take about 13 hours.

· Traveling by Jeep between Hile and Tumlingtar takes approximately 4 hours.

· Inkhu Valley valley to the Makalu Barun National Park can also be reached from Phaplu. Regular flights are available from Kathmandu to Lukla /Phaplu.



Day 01 — Kathmandu

On arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport in Katmandu, our company representative will meet you and transfer you to your pre-booked hotel. Freshen up, and enjoy a welcome drink and relax.

Day 02 — Guided Kathmandu Sightseeing Tour

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. Your full-day sightseeing tour by taxi/jeep will begin in the Kathmandu Valley and will include the Pashupatinath Temple, the BoudhnathStupa, the Royal Palace, Budhanilkantha, SwayambhuNath, Kathmandu Darabar Square, PatanDarabar Square, and more! You will have an early lunch at a local restaurant and will return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 03 — Kathmandu – Tumling Tar (457m, 40 min. flight) – Khandbari (1036 m)

After breakfast at the hotel, our representative will brief you on the day’s events and you will have an opportunity to discuss your previous day’s experience. You may then prepare to go to Kathmandu airport for your flight to Tumling Tar. Your flight takes for about 40 minutes. Our company representative will meet and welcome you at the airport in Tumling, and will take you to Hotel Arun for lunch and some rest. After lunch you will travel about one hour by Jeep to Khandbari. You will be taken directly to your accommodation at Hotel Arati where you will overnight.

Day 04 — Khandbari – Sekaya Bhangkhark (1350 m, 4 hours )

Take breakfast at the hotel, and then explore Khandbari town. You will have the opportunity to visit the Khandbari Orphanage as well as Khandbari Bazaar in the morning. In the afternoon, you will meet your guide and porter and review the necessary trekking preparations before embarking on a 3-hour trek to Bhangkharka. In the evening, enjoy a cultural program show by the local community and overnight stay at Bhangkharka community home stay.

Day 05 — Bhangkharka – Chichila (1840, 5 – 6 hours)

In the morning after your breakfast at the home stay, participate in a guided interpretive village walk and observe the local Gurung culture. Following the village walk, trek through the HarelaDndaLahariKhanrtka and enjoy the four hour jungle walk listening to the birds, taking photos of the beautiful scenery, and observing Nepal natural beauty with the knowledge and assistance of your guide. The overnight stay will be at a teahouse in Chichila managed by your guide. For dinner, enjoy the traditional Nepali food of DaalBaat.

Day 06 — Chichila – Mude/Num (1,500m, 240 m ascent, 580m descent, 5-6 hours)

After your breakfast at the teahouse at Chichila, you will trek across the slow rolling hills and observe the natural beauty and the mountain peaks to the north. Your guide will arrange a lunch at a teahouse for you. Overnight stay at the local teahouse in Num.

Day 07 — Num – Seduwa (1540 m) (4-5 hours): (880 m ascent,92m descent)

After breakfast in Num, you will lose elevation as you trek down to the Arun River. Following the river crossing, you quickly gain elevation again as you arrive at Seduwa, which is the last village before you enter the uninhabited Makalu-Barun National Park, and it is home to the Makalu Barun National Park Office. You spend your over night at a teahouse at Seduwa.

Day 08 — Seduwa Rest Day

Today, take the day to relax and do some laundry. Seduwa is famous for its good tap water.

Day 09 — Seduwa – Tasi Gaon

Enjoy the rural scenery as we trek from Seduwa to Tashigaon. Overnight stay at a local tea house.

Day 10 — Tashigaon – Khongma (3560 m, 1425 m ascent, 6-8 hours)

Today, the trek involves a climb on a very steep trail – you will reach an elevation (Shiptom La 4216m) where you may experience the first sign of altitude sickness, so you will have to be aware of any symptoms. Our guides will assist you should you experience any discomfort during this rigorous trek with sharp elevation gains. Day 11 — Khongma – Dobato (3,550 m, 1170 m ascent, 1180 m descent, 4 – 5 hours)

We start this trek early in the morning to minimize landslide risks in some of the unstable zones that we will be traversing. Overnight stay at the local teahouse.

Day 12 — Dobato – Yangle Kharka (3600 m, 770m descent, 750m ascent, 4 – 5 hours)

770m descent, 750m ascent Overnight stay at the local teahouse.

Note:

MAST service charge to fund SESF orphanage support program and child education program. MAST exists to fund these projects.
MAST is not collecting any money for Teahouse / home stays breakfast, food and accommodation cost up to the destination as well Park Entrance fees from our guests. We think the guests can directly pay these costs to their service providers with the help of their guide.
